Vintage Tool Restoration Materials Database is a free reference tool created to help restorers, antique dealers, and collectors find appropriate materials for authentic restoration work.

The Challenge

Restoring a vintage hand tool requires knowing which materials were used in its original era. Modern substitutes often look wrong or perform poorly. Finding period-appropriate finishes, compounds, and repair materials requires significant research across multiple sources.

What This Database Provides

This database organizes restoration materials by tool type (planes, chisels, saws, spokeshaves, rasps) and era (Colonial through mid-century). Each entry includes usage instructions, typical sources, and notes on why the material works for that period.

How It Works

The database runs entirely in your browser. No servers, no tracking, no data collection. Your favorites are saved locally. The material list is comprehensive but not exhaustive - we focus on the most commonly needed items for typical restoration projects.

Future Development

Future versions may include community-submitted techniques, expanded tool categories, and integration with supplier inventory systems. The goal is to become a complete restoration reference while maintaining the privacy-respecting approach.

Credits and Sources

Material information is compiled from historical texts, restoration manuals, and supplier catalogs. We thank the many restorers who share their knowledge in forums and club newsletters.
